$20 Challenge

August 13th, 2006 at 08:37 pm

Ok, I've been struggling with this one. I read in someone's post that the $20 challenge was saving money that you normally wouldn't have earned, and since I'm a sahm I don't earn much. I do teach an exercise class four days per week and earn a little from that. So I won't count that money or the money I get from my change jar (just cashed it in a couple of weeks ago for $248!).

But I've decided that I will count the money I save when choosing not to eat out (since that's such a sacrifice). The money I accumulate is going to my "Why'd you go and do something stupid like that" credit card with a balance of a little over $5000. I'll post the exact balance and the story behind it later.

I've decided I might try selling a few things on eBay, after I clean out the kids closets before school if there's anything worth selling.

So my balance for the challenge right now is $0, but hopefully it will grow and I'm going to brainstorm tonight for more ideas.

Any advice??

Some people pay themselves for doing things, like walking a certain amount or studying or going up and down the steps more per day. Some also add what they save from couponing or rebating.
    Good luck!

I am the one that pays myself for walking each 30 mnutes. I also save everything I get using coupons or the stores discount cards. I pay myself a dollar in I stay home and use no gas. I don't buy much, but if it is something I need, and I can get a sale, I do save that.
any checks that come unexpectly go to the challenge as does all the money from my change jar. I am going to have a garage sale when it is cooler. Some make things and sell them and some sell on e bay. some collect cans. There are lots of things you can think of!

Oh, I am bad to eat out every night. When I stay home I pay myself the difference in my meal at home and the meal out. It is usually $20.

Selling on Ebay I think is a great start, I have considered this myself but I am so lazy. What I have done to add to my challenge as far as dining out goes, is when ever I eat out I match that amount so I usually think twice about eating out. Last month the grand total was : $19.71 and that is because i treated my dad. I use to spend atleast $200.00 a month but since I have started matching the amount it has been a help in cutting this expense. Good luck
